In Africa, young people have used digital tools to organise themselves in order to have an impact on their communities and bring about social change. Their projects are borne out of ideas that they often pursue on their own, without support or guidance. The Africa Citizen Lab project is a support and coaching programme for young people, civil society organisations and social movements by providing them with a citizen incubator. Its Open social project component supports and assists projects with a strong social impact. Africa Citizen Lab will also host a series of pan-African hackathons on current issues including the shrinking civic space. It also helps political institutions to reinstate the citizen at the heart of local democracy.
