The Charter Project Africa is a 3-year programme led by a Consortium of six (6) African and international organisations to assist in the implementation and ownership of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Good Governance (ACDEG) through advocacy, training, awareness raising using digital tools.
The project promotes the use of civic technology to amplify citizens’ voices by providing financial and technical support to pro-democracy civic initiatives in eleven African Union member states – Benin, Botswana, Cabo Verde, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia – as well as at the regional and continental level.
It also opens up spaces for collaboration between citizens, civic initiatives and policy makers in the African Union, at national, regional and continental levels – with a focus on digital formats.
The Charter Project Africa further aims to build the capacity of civil society to represent citizens at the continental level, to work with the AGA and to promote democratic governance in AU member states. It also promotes civic youth initiatives and promotes the use of knowledge, data and technology to analyse, monitor and promote the implementation of the ACDEG. Ultimately, it aims to strengthen collaboration between AU policymakers, national decision-makers and CSOs to jointly address the challenges of democratic governance.
